Why You Need Travel Insurance (And Not From the Cruise Line)

By Kaitlin Leal · Leopard Lounge Travel

Here's a conversation I have with almost every client: "Should I buy the travel insurance the cruise line offers?" My answer is always the same — buy travel insurance, but not from the cruise line. Here's why.

The Big Problem with Cruise Line Insurance

When you book a cruise, the cruise line will offer you their own protection plan. It seems convenient — just check the box and add it to your booking. But here's what most people don't realize:

Cruise line insurance typically pays you back in cruise credit, not cash.

Read that again. If you spend $5,000 on a cruise and something happens — a family emergency, a medical issue, a hurricane — the cruise line's plan will often reimburse you with credit toward a future sailing. Not money back in your bank account. Cruise credit.

That means you're locked into cruising with that same line to get your money's worth. If your plans change, if you decide you want a resort instead, or if you just need the cash — too bad.

Third-party travel insurance pays you in actual money. Back to your bank account. Cash. Done.

Why Third-Party Insurance Is Better

1. Cash Reimbursement, Not Cruise Credit

This is the biggest one. A good third-party policy reimburses you in real dollars. Cancel for a covered reason, file a claim, get your money back. Simple.

2. It Usually Costs Less

This surprises people. Third-party travel insurance is often cheaper than what the cruise line charges for their own plan. You get better coverage for less money. It's genuinely a better deal.

3. It Covers Your ENTIRE Trip — Not Just the Cruise

This is the part most people miss. Cruise line insurance only covers the cruise itself. But your trip starts when you leave your house to head to the airport and ends when you walk back through your front door. A good third-party policy covers everything in between:

4. Broader Coverage for More Situations

Third-party policies typically cover a wider range of scenarios than cruise line plans. With a quality policy, you're covered for:

Who I Recommend: World Trips

I book all of my clients' travel insurance through World Trips on their Preferred policy. I chose them for several reasons:

When I book your trip, I'll include a World Trips quote so you can see exactly what coverage you get and what it costs. There's no pressure, but I strongly recommend it for every trip — especially cruises, international travel, and any vacation over $2,000.

The Bottom Line

Travel insurance isn't about expecting something to go wrong — it's about protecting your investment so that if something does happen, you get your money back and you're taken care of. Don't gamble thousands of dollars on a trip without protecting it.

And please — if you do buy insurance, don't buy it from the cruise line. Get a real policy that pays real money and covers your entire journey. Your future self will thank you.
